My first stay in Taiwan was in 1999 when I spent a year teaching English and studying Chinese. I then returned to Taiwan for a few months in 2002. In 2006 I once again returned to Taiwan and lived there continuously for five years. I left Taiwan in 2011 and am now living in Australia.
I graduated from the International Master’s Program in Taiwan Studies at National Chengchi University (NCCU; 國立政治大學) in 2010. My thesis was titled, “Indigenous Rights in Taiwan and the Smangus Case” (download the pdf file). I also wrote a book chapter based on my thesis research titled “Nation vs. Tradition: Indigenous Rights and Smangus” which was published in the book Taiwan Since Martial Law. The book is a useful resource for students of Taiwan Studies and anyone who wants to better understand contemporary Taiwan.
